Lesson 1: Teacher Guide
Introduction to Integers & Absolute Value
Objective
Students will define integers, represent positive and negative quantities on a horizontal number line, determine opposite values, and evaluate absolute value as distance from zero.
Materials
Horizontal desk number line strips, two-color counters, student guided note sheets, dry-erase markers, and Lesson 1 practice pages.
Warm-up
Display real-world scenarios such as ocean depth, mountain elevation, bank deposits, and winter temperatures. Ask students to categorize each scenario as positive or negative.
Main activity
Guide students through integer definitions and opposite pairs on the number line. Demonstrate that absolute value measures magnitude regardless of direction, emphasizing that distance cannot be negative.
Assessment
Collect the Lesson 1 Quiz and check student definitions of absolute value during guided practice to identify any sign confusion.

Lesson 1: Guided Notes
Integers and Absolute Value
An integer is any number from the set of whole numbers and their opposites, including positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero. On a standard horizontal number line, positive integers lie to the right of zero, while negative integers lie to the left. Every integer has an opposite that is located the exact same distance from zero on the other side of the number line. For example, the opposite of positive five is negative five. Absolute value describes the actual physical distance between a specific number and zero on the number line. Because distance is always measured as a non-negative quantity, absolute value is always positive or zero. The absolute value of negative eight is written with vertical bars as |-8| = 8. Similarly, the absolute value of positive eight is |8| = 8. When comparing integers, any value located farther to the right on a number line is always greater than any value to its left.
