Teacher Guide: Two-Column Proofs
Scramble & Justification Unit
Objective
Students will reconstruct scrambled two-column proofs by sequencing statements logically and pairing each statement with its valid postulate, definition, or theorem.
Materials
Activity pack pages, scissors, glue sticks, highlighters, geometric straightedges, and student reference sheets for congruence theorems.
Warm-up
Display a three-step algebraic equation on the board. Ask students to supply the justifying property of equality for every operation performed.
Main activity
Students cut out scrambled statements and justifications, arrange them in deductive sequential order, verify transitions with a peer, and paste into proof frames.
Assessment
Evaluate student accuracy on the final proof arrangement, justification alignment, and the comprehensive logic assessment quiz.

Foundations of Geometric Proof
Statements, Reasons, and Deductive Logic
A two-column proof organizes deductive reasoning into progressive statements on the left and mathematical reasons on the right. Every proof begins with given information representing accepted premises. Subsequent statements must follow through direct logical inference. Valid reasons include undefined terms, precise definitions, postulates accepted without proof, algebraic properties of equality, and previously proven theorems. Common properties include the Reflexive Property, stating an entity equals itself; the Symmetric Property, allowing equality order reversal; and the Transitive Property, transferring equality across intermediate terms. When proving geometric congruence, each physical claim regarding segments or angles must be anchored by an explicit theorem before drawing conclusions.
